Do you remember sitting on the floor as a kid, rifling through boxes of old photographs? I remember sitting crisscross on the ground, picking up picture after picture, surrounded by my sisters. We’d laugh as we remembered little moments captured on our little Kodak cameras. Since then, somewhere in the midst of a fast paced, materialistic world, I think we lost something. When was the last time you held a photograph in your hand?
Nowadays, photographs really aren’t as tangible. We live our lives day by day through our phones. There isn’t nearly as much you can hold in your hands – it’s all online.
With your wedding photos, let’s put them back in your hands. Let me give something tangible. Something nostalgic.
Picture this…..
You hear a knock at your door and a package is delivered. When you bring it inside and rip off the paper, it’s a small white box filled with your wedding photos. Your gallery is finally ready to view! You’ve waited weeks for it to come and you call your husband, excited. He needs to get home, and soon! You don’t want this moment to fly by way too fast. Instead of spending your lunch break tapping through your online gallery and texting your favorites to him, you set the box on the table and wait for your date. As the day ends, you pour you and your husband a glass of wine. You light a fire and snuggle up in a cozy blanket. And then, you open the box and every moment, every detail from your day comes rushing back. You cry as you notice the tears in your husband’s eyes as he watches you get ready for the first time. You squeeze each other’s hands as he sees you walk down the aisle again. When you hold the picture of your grandparents dancing in your hands you think about how lucky you are to have their marriage as a model. You admire how beautiful your mom looks in the dress she picked. You laugh at the behind the scenes with your best friends. You can’t believe these are your photos to keep.
Five hundred little moments. Five hundred memories. Five hundred photographs from your very best day. All packaged away in your perfect little box.
When you are done, you both tuck the box away in the perfect spot, thinking about the day you can share it with your family and friends over dinner.
This is my invitation to go back in time with me. Far away from a world filled with screens. You’ll experience a slow pace, flipping through photographs one by one. Your wedding day is one of the happiest days of your life. You wait and wait for it to come and then it flies by way too fast. Let yourself cherish the memories as you hold each and every photo in your hands. Let them take you through your day moment by moment.
One day, far from now, when your grandkids are running through your house, playing hide and seek in closets and rummaging through your old things, I hope they come across your little white box. A box filled with timeless moments. They’ll look at your smiling face, your white dress, their grandpa’s tears as you walk down the aisle, and say to themselves, “Wow, they are so in love”.
